How to Download & Process DEMNAS/SRTM Data in Global Mapper for Topographic Mapping

Just downloading DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data is a headache, let alone when you open it in Global Mapper, the file makes your laptop lag severely. Should you use DEMNAS (8m resolution for Indonesia) or SRTM (30m global resolution)? Both have advantages, but the wrong processing can make your topographic map look blocky like a pixel game. In this article, we’ll casually discuss how to download, clip, all the way to creating smooth contours and hillshades in Global Mapper. Step 1: Download the Right DEMNAS or SRTM

For the Indonesian area, it is highly recommended to use DEMNAS (can be downloaded for free on the BIG/Geospasial site) because its 8-meter resolution is more detailed. For foreign areas or needing quick global data, use SRTM 30m from USGS EarthExplorer. Pro tip: Don’t download a whole island! Your laptop will crash. Use helper tools like QGIS or finder sites to limit the download area (bounding box) according to your Area of Interest (AOI) only. Many make the mistake of downloading a 2GB file, then regret it because the laptop hangs.

Step 2: Open and “Clip” Data in Global Mapper

Open Global Mapper, drag & drop the DEM file (usually .tif or .dem format). If a CRS warning appears, select WGS 84 or the appropriate UTM Zone. DEM data usually covers a very wide area. To speed up work, click File → Export → Export Vector Format or use the Digitize tool to create a polygon bounding your AOI. Then, right-click on the DEM layer → Export DEM to XYZ format or use File → Export → Export Raster/Image, and make sure you check the option Crop to Current Screen Bounds or Crop to Selected Polygon. Now your laptop can breathe a sigh of relief. This clipping process is mandatory if you don’t want to wait for loading for hours.

Step 3: Generate Smooth Contours

A topographic map is incomplete without contour lines. In Global Mapper, open the menu Analysis → Generate Contours (from Terrain Grid). Enter the contour interval (e.g., 5 meters or 10 meters). The secret to smooth contours (not jagged) lies in the Contour Options. Activate Smooth Contours and set the Smoothing Tolerance to a suitable number (usually 1.0 – 2.0). Click OK, and aesthetic contour lines will immediately appear. You can immediately change their colors based on elevation in the Layer Options menu. If it’s not smooth, your contours will look like saw teeth, journal reviewers will definitely complain.

Step 4: Create Hillshade & Slope Analysis

To make your topographic map look 3D and dramatic, you need a Hillshade. Open Analysis → Generate Hillshade/Aspect/Slope. Select Hillshade, set the Azimuth (sun) at 315° and Altitude at 45° for the most natural shadow effect. For slope analysis (steepness), select the same menu but switch to Slope. Global Mapper will immediately color flat areas (green) to steep (red). Export the result to GeoTIFF or PDF to be inserted into the final map layout. A good hillshade can make your map look like a professional drawing, not cheap software output.

💡 Anti-Lag Tip: If the DEM file is still too heavy, lower its resolution when exporting by changing the Sample Spacing. Or, use the Pyramid/Overview feature in Global Mapper so the zoom-in/zoom-out process doesn’t make the application not responding.
